Isola della Gaiola

La Gaiola, one of the best places in town to enjoy a swim while admiring the unique spectacle of its island.

The visible remnants tell the story of the past of this beautiful villa, once inhabited by the wealthiest people in the world, from the Agnelli family to the Gettys. Today, it houses a study center.

During these early summer days, it is an absolute must.

The Island and the Gaiola beach belong to a protected area, with strict access regulations. From May 1st to September 30th, access is only allowed by reservation through this website.

Reservations can only be made for specific time slots (morning 9:00 AM-1:00 PM or afternoon 2:00 PM-6:00 PM) to allow access to a larger number of people. The spots are limited to a maximum of 200.

To reach La Gaiola:

🚌 Take the Cimarosa bus stop, just 5 minutes away from the Chiostro.

📍 Get off at the Discesa Coroglio – Denza stop, the journey takes about half an hour.

🚶🏻‍♂️ Take Via Tito Lucrezio Caro for 5 minutes: the view is truly enchanting.

🚶🏻‍♂️ On the right, you will find a long (and challenging) descent on cobblestones: that’s Discesa Gaiola. By following it, you will reach the Gaiola beach.

Alternatively, we at the Chiostro always recommend calling a taxi, as it saves a lot of walking distance.

Napoli sotteranea

Napoli Sotterranea (Underground Naples) is one of the oldest and most historic traces of our city.

Some structures even date back to the ancient Greeks, such as the wells and aqueducts that were created in 500 BC.

Within the maze of Napoli Underground, you can find myths and legends of all kinds, narrated by knowledgeable guides, as well as the soul of the city: every building in modern Naples was constructed on the quarry that provided the construction materials.

The attractions are numerous, ranging from the famous Fontanelle Cemetery to the various Christian catacombs.

It is a fascinating world that expands like a true underground city, thanks to the many connecting tunnels. During World War II, it became a shelter for thousands of Neapolitans threatened by bombs.

The visiting hours greatly depend on the different tour operators present. It is impossible to visit Napoli Underground without a guide (available in Italian, English, and Spanish). Napoli Underground is open for visits from Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and on weekends and holidays from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Tickets can be booked online. Some tour operators offer evening visits upon reservation at 9 PM.

There are three access points, depending on the chosen tour operator, but we recommend the one at Piazza Trieste e Trento, so you can also admire the nearby Piazza del Plebiscito.

🚇 Take the metro stop (yellow line) Quattro Giornate, which is just a ten-minute walk from our Chiostro.

Biblioteca dei Girolamini

It is the second oldest library in Italy.

The Girolamini Library is one of the lesser-known gems of the city, hidden on one of Naples’ main streets, Via Duomo.

Opened in 1586 and restored by the Bourbons in 1727, the library retains its eighteenth-century style in its exquisite spaces and finely decorated vaults.

It has always been open to the public and was a frequent destination for Giambattista Vico.

The library’s collection boasts over 100,000 ancient volumes, including numerous musical works and sixteenth-century editions.

After a tumultuous journey, the library was recovered in 2022 but is currently closed to the public due to complex restoration work.

However, it can be visited on two occasions: May 31st and July 10th at 8:30 PM, thanks to the “Tempio Armonico” initiative. During these events, the musical compositions found in the library’s archives will be performed publicly.

Admission is free, and reservations can be made at the following email address: bem-gir.tempioarmonico@cultura.gov.it
